go on, humour me
When my old friend David said, ‘The best ideas come as jokes,’ he wasn’t just talking about ads—he was talking about how we approach life’s challenges.
He was also talking about my Brain Tapas™ 1 to 1 coaching style (though possibly didn’t realise at the time).
The more humour you can weave into your thinking the more edges you unlock. In all aspects of your personal and professional life.
“Humour is by far the most significant activity of the human brain.”
Humour is a creative lens. It forces a shift in perspective, and is at the heart of creativity.
Creativity to find new angles, connections and ways of approaching challenges.
“There is nothing more provocative than taking something familiar and making it seem new.”
In Brain Tapas coaching sessions, humour is a trojan horse.
It helps us explore human truths, flaws, and the shadow parts of yourself that hold the combination lock to your potential.
It’s instinctive, disarming, liberating, and enjoyable.
“If you want to tell people the truth, make them laugh, otherwise they’ll kill you.”
The success we had building Firebox usually came from finding the humour in any idea. Our best brainstorming, marketing, cult products and viral creations were always the result of doing what others don’t, messing around and creative questions.
For example:
Wrapping is hard. Men can’t wrap presents. Everyone else offers a pristine wrapping service. What if we made ours deliberately bad? = CrapWrap™ was born.
Everyone is becoming a hipster, coffee snob. It’s nonsense. What do people really want? = We created F*cking Strong Coffee.
People are shallower than ever, can’t stop taking photos of themselves, and showing off about their Instagram lives. What is the funniest, weirdest natural conclusion (for April Fools Day)? = Inner Selfie Stick.
Mmmm, appetising.
Humour is the thread that runs through my favourite art, memories, conversations and friendships.
Seeing the lightness, weirdness and comedy in life doesn’t just improve your day.
It’s a creative weapon.
If you want to find your edge - in your thinking, business or personal life - then humour can be a powerful catalyst.
You don’t even have to be funny. I’m not a comedian, we’re not here to crack jokes or force humour into every session (because forced humour = 🤮).
Instead, it’s about using humour as another option in the Brain Tapas™ pick and mix toolset.
Because I don’t mess around when it comes to messing about.
The more willing you are to find the humour in a situation, the more you can find innovative solutions.
If you like a solemn, faux therapy, awkward, low on laughter vibe with someone sagely nodding/chin scratching whilst you talk and try to find all the answers yourself - then you need a generic life coach (and you have plenty of options).
If you’re open minded, like collaboration and big ideas, are able to laugh at yourself, whilst mucking around with ideas, then you need Brain Tapas™.
If you want to challenge yourself, energise your thinking, spark breakthroughs and big results, then you really need Brain Tapas™.
Your intellectual sparring partner, dull thinking detonator, life coaching cliché assassin and contrarian sidekick.
Your thinking prostitute!
Your life catalyst.
